Whatever Happened to Good Movie Songs?

Comicbookresources.com has done it again, creating another fascinating article that this time deals with the lack of movie tie-in songs from summer blockbusters.

They wrote this article based on the recently released Men in Black III film, which no longer has Will Smith creating a song as he did for the first one.

They highlight the Puff Daddy song "Come with Me" from the 1998 Godzilla - The Album soundtrack as a perfect example of this missing phenomena.

There you had a major artist working with a studio to create a very recognizable pop song, one that would be released in and around the time the film debuts.

Said pop song would sell millions, it would create more buzz for the movie and its soundtrack, and the rest was history.

(On a side note, it was interesting to learn that this Godzilla album was the first one to utilize "music from and inspired by", which allowed them to showcase songs not featured within the film).

It is true on what the article claims.

Sometime after the 2000's movie blockbusters no longer made the effort to do things like this.

It's difficult to gauge any particular reason why...my best guess is that it became way to expensive to contract these major artists for a soundtrack that could potentially bomb.

In any case here's the article for further reading:
