io9’s March Movie Madness: Pick the worst science fiction movie ever made!

Now this is just wrong.

io9.com now has their own version of "March Madness", this time incorporating match-ups between the worst science fictions films ever made.

(So number 1 picks are paired with number 8's, number 2's with number 7's, number 3's with number 6's, and so on).

Each pick is voted on by io9.com users and whoever "wins" (or loses if you ask me) moves to the next round.

The 1998 "Godzilla" was ranked at number 8th with the box-office bomb known as "Stealth"...and it "won"...by just under 20 votes no less.

As such "Godzilla" is now moving onto the next round...and it'll be interesting to see if it gets the most votes yet again.

Godzilla Image of the Day

Now this was fun!

Called the Sci-Fi Film Alphabet, it's a guessing game that'll keep you occupied for hours.

Essentially you have to figure out which movie each image is from, with clues given through attached letters.

For example in the "G" category it's obviously "Godzilla", and in the "E" category it's "The Empire Strikes Back" and so on.

No cheating of course...the fun comes from only having that one image and letter to work with.

Great little mini-game!

Apparently I'm not the nerd I thought I was as I could barely guess about 1/3 of these images.

How far can anyone else get here?

Top 50 Most-Hated Films of All-Time

Worstpreviews.com recently created a list called the "Top 50 Most-Hated Films of All-Time".

(Kind of a strong statement there don't you think?)

They based this off of what their website's fans picked, and coming in at number one is Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull followed by Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, both films steered (of course) by George Lucas.

Not bad George, got kind of a one-two punch combo there.

I still don't understand the hate towards these two films. They're perfect summer popcorn stuff, nothing more and nothing less.

I just rewatched that Indiana Jones film last week and still seemed fine.

In any case the 1998 Godzilla film also makes the list, coming in at number 35.

So it looks like the website viewers loved that Godzilla movie more than the two Matrix sequels (who both came in at number 36)...but not enough to replace Van Helsing at number 34?

Weird bunch.

For the rest of the list I've included that link here. At the end of the day most of these movie just aim to entertain, not to change people's lives. They make great movie rentals with the family.

Godzilla Video of the Day

Who know that Godzilla now pimps out cough syrup?

What a weird weird weird commercial.

I don't know if this thing is real or not...but it looks real.

Why a disco-dancing Godzilla is needed and how that relates to cough syrup is beyond me...and yet there it is in all of its glory.

Just when you've thought you've seen it all hehe.

Disney Developing Sci-Fi Space Adventure 'Paladin'

It looks like Disney is developing yet another sci-fi adventure for a franchise, this one known as "Paladin" of all things.

What does this have to do with Godzilla you ask?

It's because Disney is hiring "Godzilla" screenwriter Max Borenstein to help write this.

Max of course was hired back in November to work on the new Godzilla movie for Legendary Pictures.

The fact that he is now working on this new Disney film tells me that he's finished his part on the Godzilla film.

I say this because generally most screenwriters do not take on multiple projects...unless you're David Goyer who can't seem to say no to anything these days.

This in turn tells me that we might hear something soon regarding the status of the new Godzilla movie...and who knows, it may be the good news we've all been waiting to hear...that things are finally moving forward.

Of course I could be wrong...but hopefully what I'm stating turns out to be true.

Godzilla Legends #5 preview

It's finally here.

The final issue in this great series, Godzilla Legends #5, is landing in comic book stores tomorrow.

As a nice gesture IDW provided the first 8 pages within the issue, giving us a good glimpse of what's in store.

Looks very interesting...the idea of a man daring to jump on Godzilla in order to obtain samples!

I highly recommend everyone to pick this up this issue as it will remain the final Godzilla comic book for quite a while...at least until the new Godzilla series debuts in May.

Godzilla Image of the Day

Pretty cool looking Candelabra no?

Apparently there's an art designer named Johan Bruninx who has taken modern toys and manipulated them in a way to represent something else.

He's very much a surreal artist based on the extreme liberties he takes...case in point this candle-holding Godzilla.

It looks like he took a normal Godzilla toy and coated it in a metallic covering, then affixed these two candle holders to it.

I think it's trying to represent Godzilla literally bringing fire to the people, like Prometheus, but I could be wrong.

The Horror Highlights of WonderCon 2012

If you're going to the WonderCon 2012 event next week then you're in luck, as a Godzilla event is being held on Sunday March 18th.

Here's the info as follows:

3:30-4:30 The Godzilla Films of Ishiro Honda— Honda historian Peter H. Brothers, author of Mushroom Clouds and Mushroom Men, will discuss the director's eight Godzilla films and the circumstances leading to the monster's metamorphosis from powerful social commentary to pop-culture icon. Room 213

Sounds very interesting!

Peter H. Brothers is a noted expert in the world of Godzilla, has presented numerous times on the subject and is frequently listed throughout various kaiju interviews and blogs.

He's even written this book Mushroom Clouds and Mushroom Men: The Fantastic Cinema of Ishiro Honda, which is a fascinating look into the man that essentially created Godzilla, Ishiro Honda.

Great stuff!

I wish I was going to WonderCon but unfortunately it remains way too far away in California.

Paul WS Anderson's Top 10 Monster Movies

Noted sci-fi/horror director Paul WS Anderson recently did an interview with totalfilm.com, and in it he lists his Top 10 Monster Movies of all time.

Coming in at number 3 is Godzilla on Monster Island, more commonly known as "Godzilla vs Gigan" depending on which part of the world you're at.

Here's what he has to say about it:

"I love Godzilla. Not necessarily Roland’s movie, but the original Toho movies.

There’s that fantastic movie, Godzilla On Monster Island. It’s the greatest hits of every single Toho movie where they discover an island where all of the monsters have been sent.

Everybody lives there, Godzilla, Mothra, they’re all hanging out in the same resort. Kind of like a club-med, all drinks are comped so they’re all behaving rather badly.

I like it anytime Godzilla goes on a rampage and I have a soft spot for those puppets or guys in suits."

I like Paul's work.

A lot of other sci-fi fans claim that he's a hack and can't visually compare to the likes of Kubrick or Spielberg, but to Paul's defense I don't think he ever sets to do that.

He just likes to make his films a certain way, have them be good popcorn material, and enjoy some success out of it.

I mean films like Event Horizon and Resident Evil aren't exactly going to set the world on fire...but they're still great films to watch.

It's why his films tend to be hallmarks on the SyFy, Spike TV and other similar channels.

Godzilla's past, present, and hopefully not lousy future: A three-film primer

Techrepublic.com has a pretty good article where the author highlights three films as "primers" for anyone just starting out with Godzilla.

(With over 20+ films to choose from, the author wanted to narrow things down for added convenience).

Besides the original classic Gojira, the other three films are Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah - Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, Godzilla Vs Hedorah and Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah.

All interesting and inspired choices, as all three remain good staples within the Godzilla franchise.

I especially like the author's pick of Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah - Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, as that remains quite a wildcard of sorts.  Never before has Godzilla been portrayed as such an evil entity, and it was equally rare (and quite delightful) to see King Ghidorah take on the role of an anti-hero.

Only with Godzilla 1985 did I see Godzilla act more villainous, but GMK certainly had it's moments.

Also Hedorah remains one of the most revered one-shot villains yet. There's just something so unique about his concept and design...he just begs to be reused.

I've heard him mentioned as a potential villain within the new Godzilla reboot, but I think it's more fan-dreams than anything else.

Using Hedorah would immediately make the film too politically correct, as no doubt it would have to point towards Earth's pollution problems.
