Godzilla Image of the Day

I've included this image for my "Image of the Day" column because I always found Godzilla so weird-looking here.

This is actually the "Godzilla, King of the Monsters Special" that Dark Horse comics released back in 1987.

It was done as a single-issue special, all in black and white.

In any case look at Godzilla's face and body here.

Did the artist who drew this not know how Godzilla should have looked like?

The neck is too long, the arms too thin, the belly is too fat, not the least of which the almost human-like face Godzilla has.

It's a good issue nonetheless...it's just the cover that always threw me off.

The Top 10 Comics For May, 2012

Now that May has come and gone, mtv.com has an article highlighting the top 10 comics within that month.

Coming in at number 9 is none other than the newest Godzilla series from IDW, "Godzilla".

(On a side note I always found it interesting that IDW didn't add any subtitles within this new series. Maybe it's to remind everybody that this is a reboot of sorts...?)

Here's what they have to say about the recently released issue:

"Jason Statham fights Godzilla in a collapsing building. What more do you want? Okay, fine, writer Duane Swierczynski plays this out as the monster movie of our dreams, with Godzilla going nuts in Washington, and finally pissing off the wrong guy. It’s a great mash-up of everything that’s fun about Kaiju, with a deep, understated human element as well. Expendables versus Giant Monsters? We’re on board.".

Sounds like some kickass stuff...no wonder they added it into their top ten list!

Godzilla in a "Comic Book Crossovers We'd like to See" article

MTV.com has a new article dedicated to the Top 10 crossovers they'd like to see within the comic book world.

This is all in anticipation to the "Star Trek Next Generation and Doctor Who Assimilation" series that's just about to come out.

In the article they cite various crazy crossovers...such as GI Joe vs Dungeons and Dragons, Buffy vs True Blood, CSI: Planet of the Apes, and so on.

They even include Godzilla at number 3, this time matching him against another popular IDW franchise, Transformers!

Here's what they have to say on this:

"3. Godzilla vs. Transformers

There is literally nothing about watching giant monsters kick the crap out of giant robots that doesn’t sound cool... And if you don’t agree, you’re probably reading the wrong website."

Amen.

While I have no doubt that IDW would be more than happy to do this...it seems like Toho Studios avoids mingling Godzilla with other trademark characters.

Sure Godzilla was in Marvel comics some decades back...and even met some Avengers along the way...but things sure have changed.

So the likelihood of this remains practically zero.

Godzilla Image of the Day

****Credit goes to Paul Hanley for this spectacular image****

Feast your eyes on this!

Two titans squaring off against each other, with the fate of the world hanging in balance!

Honestly I would not know who would win in a fight like this...as I know next to nothing when it comes to the Leviathan known as Cthulhu.

What his special powers are...what strength he has...what his stamina is...who knows.

But it certainly makes for an interesting topic when it comes to this battle!

Godzilla going Digital!

Honestly I had thought this was already being done...but I guess even going digital requires special clearances from Toho Studios.

In any case the big news is that IDW comics should now have their entire Godzilla back catalog, which includes "Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters", "Godzilla: Gangsters and Goliaths" and the superb "Godzilla: Legends", all available for purchase/download through their digital store!

This even includes their current "Godzilla" series and the upcoming "Godzilla: The Half-Century War".

Fantastic news!

Again I would have thought that IDW was already doing this since a long time back...but who knows why it took them so long to get on this bandwagon.

Personally I don't read digital comics...I still very much prefer the look and feel of actual paper comics...but by all means I hold no grudges against this advancement within the comic book world.
