What should the new "Godzilla" movie be titled?

One curious thing about this Godzilla movie from Legendary Pictures is that there hasn't been any title announced.

Normally films debut their title long before any serious development begins.

Case in point, "Man of Steel", "The Dark Knight Rises", "The Amazing Spider-Man" and "Pacific Rim" all announced their titles as their first bit of development news.

George Lucas made it his forte during each prequel!

Not so with "Godzilla".

Up until now each script developed has failed to incorporate any title announcement, which makes me want to come up with my own just for fun.

Personally I think the COOLEST name this film can ever have is....

"KING OF THE MONSTERS"

I like this title because a) it sounds original while still reminding you of Godzilla, b) calling it "Godzilla" would of course be exactly what the 1998 film was called, c) having added subtitles like "3D" or "2014" would just be too cheesy, d) it highlights that the movie would contain "monsters", and d) it sounds VERY powerful and epic.

What do you guys think?

Former Akira Director, Former Potential Crow in Line for "Here There Be Monsters"

Further proof that kaiju movies are all the rage, now comes word on a new sea monster film to star Bradley Cooper.

Titled "Here There Be Monsters", shocktillyoudrop.com has a great synopsis available:

"Cooper would play real-life Revolutionary War hero John Paul Jones, albeit a much-younger Jones, well before he had famously "not yet begun to fight" the Brits. After he's stripped of his British naval commission, Jones is hired by a shipping magnate to investigate the disappearance of merchant ships in the North Atlantic, which are used as toothpicks (beak-picks?) by a giant squid.".

Sounds great!

So now we have "Godzilla", "Cloverfield 2", "Pacific Rim", "Rampage" and "Here there Be Monsters" all in development...all dealing with kaiju-sized monsters looking to wreck havoc on humanity.

It's a good time to be a monster movie fan!

Weird Godzilla Toy...part 20

Yet another edition in my "Weird Godzilla Toy" column.

Apparently this photo is showcasing the King Ghidorah toy in its final form...as an egg.

Why a toymaker would make King Ghidorah transform into this shape is beyond me.

I don't recall any movie where the tyrant king adopted this shape out of defense...or offense for that matter.

Is it suppose to be more like a piggy bank then? Maybe a little satchel of sorts?

Who knows, but it certainly remains a weird matter.

Legendary Closes $275 Million Financing Deal

The hollywoodreporter.com has some great news regarding Legendary Pictures!

Apparently the company has been able to procure nearly $300 million in new financing that would allow them to a) pay off some of their debts, b) refinance others, and most importantly c) have capital to produce their own films.

I love reading financial stories because I'm a huge finance buff, doubly when matters have to do with this great company.

Everyone should get excited over this because this means Legendary Pictures is going nowhere!

Investors are happy with what Legendary Pictures has been producing, enough for others to jump in and help them grow.

Imagine if you had a business and it was becoming so successful others now want to become your business partner...that is what's going on here.

This all of course ties into the "Godzilla" film being produced by them, so it makes me all the more happier!

'Godzilla: Half-Century War' Announced by IDW

Another day another set of news involving IDW comics and Godzilla!

Adding to their solid base of Godzilla comics, in August IDW will release another new Godzilla series, this one titled "Godzilla: Half-Century War".

Comicsalliance.com has a great article featuring more details, which will contain the writing/drawing work of James Stokoe!

Here's what IDW had to say on this release:

"Introducing a new and exciting look at Godzilla's reign of destruction, courtesy of Orc Stain creator James Stokoe! The year is 1954 and Lieutnant Ota Murakami is on hand when Godzilla makes first landfall in Japan. Along with his pal Kentaro, Ota makes a desperate gamble to save lives... and in the process begins an obsession with the King of the Monsters that lasts fifty years! Don't miss the first decade in a tale of a lifetime!"

So it looks to be a flashback story of sorts that culminates to the present...sounds great!

And what I love best is that from the looks of it we'll FINALLY have a Godzilla series that will feature ultra-detailed artwork.

Just look at the preview page shown here! You could spend hours looking at that fine detail.

I can't wait until this comic comes out in August.

New Line Hires Relative Newcomer to Pen 'Rampage' Movie

A little while back I had mentioned that a new "Rampage" movie was being developed by New Line Cinema, this based on the popular arcade/console game involving kaiju-like monsters.

Flash forward to today and New Line is officially moving forward by hiring Ryan Eagle to pen its script.

If you're wondering why I chronicle this news in a Godzilla website it's because I'm keen on discussing anything involving kaiju-related films.

From "Cloverfield 2" to "Pacific Rim" to "Rampage", Hollywood is slowly building a solid base of kaiju-themed movies, all hopefully culminating towards the eventual release of "Godzilla" from Legendary Pictures.

(I'm also curious to see how quickly this gets developed over said "Godzilla" film...which still seems to be taking forever to get made).

To me this is fantastic news because all of sudden these movies are the rage now.

With good fortune we'll have kaiju movies for years to come, all offering spectacular monster battles and action!

Swierczynski Battles "Godzilla"

Comicbookresources.com has a great interview with writer Duane Swierczynski (try saying his last name three times) where he talks about his new stint on "Godzilla".

"Godzilla" is the upcoming series from IDW comics that is set a few years after the events of "Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters".

In this interview Duane goes over his plans for the series, which include a group of monster bounty hunters looking to capture some of the biggest kaiju around.

Already the plot sounds more cohesive than what was in "Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters", which denotes IDW forcing a more clearer path here.

Here's a great excerpt from his interview:

"Question: From what I understand, the new "Godzilla" series will be a "soft reboot" of IDW's previous ongoing. What aspects will you be bringing along from "Kingdom of Monsters," and how will your take be a departure from that series?

It takes place a few years after the events of that series, but it's a whole new cast of characters. What I think we're doing different, too, is that it's focused on a team who have gathered together to take down these monsters freelance. We've had enough, the government's dropped the ball, no one has figured this out, but we can, because we're bad asses. It's kind of fun, the arrogance of it. The leader thinks he can do it, he has a reason for doing it, and he's not doing it out of the goodness of his heart, either. Why do mercenaries typically take a job? It's for the money. [Laughs] He sees a great opportunity for giant monster killing."

Sounds great!

Godzilla Video of the Day

Here's a fantastic video showcasing some great behind-the-scenes pictures from "Godzilla 1985".

I especially liked the picture at the 00:40 mark, which showcases the director mimicking how Godzilla should walk in that scene.

It looks to be that infamous scene where Godzilla pauses to look at this reflection in the skyscraper...which was sorely missing in the US release!

I would have loved to have seen this scene because it marked the first time Godzilla had ever witnessed his own reflection...something very poignant when one thinks about it.

Codzilla!

In Boston anytime soon?

Well you're in luck because you too can navigate the seas at Godzilla-like speeds with Codzilla!

On the Set of New York: Godzilla

A while back I had posted an article highlighting a virtual tour through the filmed locations of "Godzilla".

Basically someone visited many of the New York locations utilized the film and took picture comparisons against those scenes.

I found another website that has done the same cool thing.

As you can see from the pics above, somebody visited some of the same locations and took their own pictures, with some added film shots to see how they compare.

One BIG credit that has to go with the 1998 film, they certainly filmed things right then and there in New York.

Many films nowadays utilize locations in Canada/Australia and try pass them off as New York in order to save on costs...Emmerich and Devlin shot the real thing!

It truly made a world of difference seeing real New York landscapes/buildings in the background.
